Born in Bissau, on September 23, 1972, Umaro Sissoco Embaló holds a degree in International Relations from the higher lnstitute of Social and Political Sciences at the Technical University of Lisbon, as well has a master’s degree in Political Science and in International Relations from the Complutense University of Madrid.
He´s fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, competent in English, French, Arabic and Swahili.
Sissoco Embaló served in the military, undertaking National Defense Studies at the National Defense Center of Spain, and underwent further studies on National Security in Brussels, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Japan, and Paris. He rose to the rank of General.
He´s specialized in African and Middle-Eastern affairs and in matters of defense, international co- operation and development. He is a former Minister of African Affairs.
He was a National Security Adviser to several Heads of State and Government.
Sissoco Embaló was appointed as a Prime Minister, from November 2016 to January 2018.
He was invested on 27th February 2020 as the President of Republic and Head of the State of Guinea Bissau.
Since July 2022, Sissoco Embaló is the Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.
