ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Holds 65th Ordinary Session in Abuja

The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held its 65th Ordinary Session in Abuja, Nigeria, today July 7, 2024.

In his welcome address, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, noted that despite the challenges facing the Region, ECOWAS has recorded several achievements; like the significant transition of political authority in the Republic of Senegal, the peaceful elections in Togo and in Sierra Leone an agreement for national unity was signed by the stakeholders during a review mission that ECOWAS, UN and the African Union undertook recently.
Also, “the Community has made significant progress in the areas of trade and trade facilitation, competition as well as payment and settlement systems, industrial standards and quality harmonisation” he added.

H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, in his opening remarks underscored that a peaceful and secured society is essential for achieving our potentials as a region.

President Tinubu stressed that there is need to counter terrorism and insecurity in the Region. He encouraged his colleagues, Heads of State to support the counter-terrorism efforts of the Community.

The Summit also considered reports on the State of the Community and other Institutional matters, among others.

The Authority elected H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as its Chairman for another term of one year.
