11 Feb, 2018
Abuja, 11th February 2018. The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission is following with great interest the communal elections held on 4 February 2018 in Guinea. The President of the Commission welcomes the successful holding of elections peacefully. However, the President of the Commission is concerned about the recent developments in Guinea caracterized by strong tensions and violence causing loss of life and injuries. This post-election violence is detrimental to the peace and tranquility prevailing in the country and in the region. The President of the Commission calls on political parties and independent candidates and their supporters to refrain from any recourse to violence and to give priority to the peaceful remedies provided for and defined by the legal provisions in force. The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission strongly condemns this escalating violence and expresses his compassion and solidarity to the aggrieved families, the Government and people of Guinea.
